What hail actually does to a roof, what it looks like up close, and when it's worth filing a claim.

Hail damage on a Houston-area roof rarely looks like the dented car hood most homeowners expect. It shows up as bruised shingle mats, granule loss that collects in the gutters, and cracked seal strips, damage that's structural even when it isn't visible from the driveway. PPB Roofs And Restoration has inspected hail damage across Fort Bend County since 2020, on everything from architectural shingles installed in the 2000s-era subdivisions around Sugar Land and Richmond to the older three-tab roofs still common on original-owner homes in Rosenberg. Call (832) 384-4420 for a free inspection and we'll show you exactly what we find, on your own roof, before you decide anything.
The difference between cosmetic and functional hail damage matters, because insurance covers one and not the other. Cosmetic damage is granule scuffing that doesn't expose the mat. Functional damage is a bruise that's compressed the fiberglass mat enough to shorten the shingle's life, or a crack that's already let water past the surface. Both can be invisible from the ground, and both leave marks on soft metal, gutters, downspouts, vent covers, and AC condenser fins, that a trained eye reads even when the shingles themselves look fine at a glance.
Where to Look
Signs of Hail Damage, Area by Area
Shingles
Random, scattered bruising with no pattern, dark spots where granules have been knocked loose, and soft spots when pressed by hand.
Gutters and Downspouts
Dents in soft aluminum gutters are one of the clearest signs hail hit the property, even before you check the roof itself.
Roof Vents and Flashing
Plastic vent caps crack or dent easily and are often the first thing to show visible hail impact.
AC Condenser Fins
Bent or dented fins on the outdoor AC unit are a reliable sign of hail size and direction for the same storm that hit the roof.
Interior Ceilings
A new water stain weeks after a storm often means hail cracked a shingle's seal months before the leak became visible.
