2 Options for Your Roof Insurance Claim or Retail Replacement
Hail or wind damage and an aging roof put every Fort Bend and Houston homeowner at the same fork in the road. Here's how to tell which path is actually right for your house.

Your roof needs work, and now you're staring at two very different paths: file an insurance claim or pay for a retail replacement out of pocket. PPB Roofs & Restoration lays out both routes in plain terms before you commit to either one, because the wrong choice can cost you thousands. As a rule of thumb, if your roof is 10 or more years old and has legitimate hail or wind damage that a carrier recognizes as a covered peril, the insurance route almost always comes out ahead, and filing a legitimate weather-related claim covered under an Act of God provision does not raise your premium the way most homeowners assume. We're licensed and insured in Texas, and we walk Fort Bend and Houston homeowners through this exact decision every week.
PPB is based in Richmond and works claims and retail jobs across Fort Bend County, from Katy and Sugar Land to Missouri City, Rosenberg, and into the Houston metro. Fort Bend's hail events cluster in spring and early summer, and the Gulf Coast hurricane season from June through November adds straight-line wind damage on top of that. Both are the kind of sudden, accidental damage most Texas HO-3 policies are written to cover. The decision between insurance and retail isn't about which one is cheaper on paper, it's about what your policy actually recognizes, what your roof's age qualifies for, and what you're trying to avoid down the road.
The Two Routes
Insurance Claim or Retail Replacement: What Each One Actually Means
Route 1: The Insurance Claim
Your carrier pays for repair or replacement when the damage is sudden and accidental, like hail or straight-line wind, and not just normal wear. You pay your deductible, we document everything with drone photos and a written report, and we meet your adjuster on site. This is usually the stronger option when the roof is 10+ years old and the damage is verifiable storm damage. A legitimate weather claim filed under an Act of God provision in Texas does not get treated like an at-fault claim, so it does not trigger the rate hike homeowners worry about.
Route 2: The Retail Replacement
You pay for the full job yourself, on your own timeline, with full control over materials and upgrades the insurance scope wouldn't cover anyway. This makes sense when the roof is newer and the damage doesn't meet a claim threshold, when you want upgrades like Class 4 impact shingles or a color change insurance won't fund, or when filing isn't worth it for cosmetic wear that isn't storm related.
What We Hear Most
The Biggest Objections, and the Straight Answer
"Filing a claim will raise my insurance rate."
Not for a single legitimate weather claim. Texas insurers file rate increases based on area-wide loss trends and your claims history pattern, not one storm claim covered under an Act of God. A documented hail or wind claim is treated differently than an at-fault claim like a kitchen fire or a slip-and-fall. We guarantee to help get your premium down, in writing, when qualifying damage is verified with storm reports.
"My roof doesn't look damaged, so there's nothing to claim."
Hail bruising and wind-lifted shingles are rarely visible from the ground or from a photo on your phone. That's exactly why we run a free drone and thermal inspection before you decide anything. If there's nothing there, we tell you that, and you've lost nothing but an hour.
"Insurance companies look for reasons to deny claims."
They do push back on weak documentation, which is why ours isn't weak. Photo-verified inspections, moisture readings, and a written report built for carrier review are what get claims approved and what win them back on appeal when they get denied the first time.
"A retail job means I get exactly what I want, so why bother with insurance first?"
If your roof qualifies for a covered claim, insurance pays for the base replacement and you only pay your deductible plus any upgrades you choose, like Class 4 shingles. Going retail on a roof that would have qualified for a claim means paying full price for something your policy would have covered.
"The contractor pushing the insurance route is just trying to pad the claim."
We tell you which route actually fits your roof, including when retail is the better call. If your roof is newer or the damage doesn't meet a covered-peril threshold, we say so. Our free inspection report is yours either way, no obligation to use either path with us.
Not Sure Which Route Fits Your Roof?
Get a Free Inspection Before You Decide Either Way
A free drone inspection tells you whether your roof has verifiable storm damage and whether it's old enough that insurance is worth pursuing. No pressure toward either path.
