A Texas storm can leave your yard looking normal while your roof carries damage that is easy to miss from the ground. Knowing how to document roof storm damage gives you more than a folder of photos. It gives you a clear record of what happened, when it happened, and why your property may need repair before a small problem turns into a leak, mold issue, or larger insurance dispute.
The goal is not to diagnose your own roof or prove every detail yourself. It is to hand your insurer, and eventually a professional inspector, an organized record they can work with. Shoot in natural light first
Take photos in good natural light when possible, then use flash or a flashlight for shaded areas.
Cover multiple angles
Capture several angles of the same damage so dents, cracks, or lifted materials are clearly visible from more than one position.
Use a tape measure for scale
Place a tape measure near accessible damage to show scale, but never touch loose roofing materials or sharp debris.
Keep the original files
Avoid heavy editing, filters, or screenshots that strip date and location data from the image metadata.

Window Screens and Frames

Name Files Clearly
Use names like "May 14 Hailstorm - Exterior" or "May 14 Hailstorm - Attic Photos" so dates and locations are readable without opening each file.
Back Up Immediately
Upload to a cloud service or email copies to yourself the same day. A lost or damaged phone should not erase your only record of pre-repair conditions.
Add Documents as They Arrive
Include your insurance policy declaration page, any repair invoices, contractor estimates, adjuster correspondence, and weather service records in the same folder.
